Wendy’s Shake It Weight Management Challenge

Week 1.

Current weight: 66kgs
Waist: 76 cm
Love handles (hips): 102 cm

Starting on Wednesday 7th July 2010, well why not, had a good start with yoga?
Breakfast
I used the vanilla shake and used 250mls as I must include the ‘Bowel Flakes’ – if you want the recipe, email me.
I take Bowel Flakes to manage cholesterol (stays at about 3.3 & has done for years now) + keeps my bowels regular. The flakes also add bulk to the shake making it thick & creamy. Added the Meta Oil which has no real flavour and put the lot into a blender as you can get more air into it using a blender & create a ‘smoothie’ type drink

Mid morning
Already, I’m not hungry but down ½ a caramel Keto Bar with a pot of Dandelion tea (tastes like a cross between tea & coffee but doesn’t have the caffeine – but I’m hooked on it + it gives the liver a flush)

Lunch
Running flat out so know I’m supposed to have a meal of protein & salad / veg but no time so boil kettle & have a Shake It soup sachet to which I have added 2 of those frozen spinach cubes I zapped in the microwave.
This soup is brilliant but needs some seasoning, I use ½ teaspoon of miso, but you could use sea salt, pepper or vegemite to flavour it up. There is plenty of it (bowl size) and it is a sound meal replacement.

Mid Afternoon
Well its 4pm before I realise so have decide to have ½ of another flavour Keto Bar – vanilla nougat – yum. These are dense, filling chocolate delights, perfect for a wet cold afternoon.

Dinner
Had a piece of organic pork fillet, mashed pumpkin, carrots & broccoli.
Feeling sanctimonious!

About an hour or so after dinner, I feel like something – fight that thought for a while and have an apple. What I wanted was a chunk of one of those Keto Bars and then it hit me, if I was to divide the bar into 3 pieces I could have my after dinner sweetener. Will try that tomorrow as I found ½ a bar really more than I needed.

Have been checking to see if I am burning fat, but no and I am not surprised as it usually takes about 48 hrs before I will get a reading.

Thursday 8th July
Yoga
This morning for breakfast I use the vanilla Shake It, 250mls water, bowel flakes, oil & add ½ cup of frozen mixed berries in the blender - sensational
Manage my day well, have to keep remembering to eat mid morning & afternoon snacks as I normally don’t eat between meals.
Challenge tonight as we are going to the Opera House to see “A Little Night Music” – ate at home before going to show but had 2 glasses of sparkling wine at the Opera.

Friday 9th July
Still not registering ketones but not surprised.
When to yoga – challenging practice
Made flourless chocolate cake – it can be used as a snack was I was very keen. I made them into muffin size little cakes for ease of portion control - they are very filling, dense & I over the bloody things so they were quite dry.
Busy day and doing basically what I’m supposed to do with meals but eating 3 cups of veggies + 1 fruit, supposed to eat 2 cups + 1 fruit
Yes, succumbed to wine again tonight

Saturday 10th July
A very social day, lunch out after finished clinic and then went to the Vanguard at Newtown to hear a band doing a lot of Bad Company’s songs – showing age. The ticket came as a dinner show package + free wine!!! What could I do?
Had grilled piece of salmon, did not eat the lemon risotto that came with it and ate steamed beans. No desert.
The compromise was to walk for a few kilometres rather than grabbing a cab.

Sunday 11th July
Hit the road on the bikes and did quite a bit of hill climbing thinking of that wine.
After that a good lunch sticking to my guns – grilled cuttlefish & salad + wine
Ate a portion of the chocolate cake I made on Friday and it was much nicer than on the day it was made – more flavour & not so dry, I think I over cooked them

The bicycle shorts shot (gross) on Sunday morning. I’ll get another one taken at the end of 6 weeks and we’ll see if you can visually see any change to those love handles.

The issue with alcohol and ketones
The liver can make ketones out of alcohol, so when you drink you'll continue to produce ketones and so will remain in ketosis. The problem is ... alcohol converts more easily to ketones than fatty acids, so your liver will use the alcohol first, in preference to fat. When you drink, basically your FAT burning is put on hold until all the alcohol is out of your system.

Monday 12th July
Yoga
Back onto the straight and narrow, will now have 3 or 4 alcohol free days. This is a practice we have developed over the years to moderate the wine could we consume & I highly recommend it to everyone who likes wine or alcohol.
Cruising well with loads of energy and finding this diet no hardship.

A point about refined carbohydrates
I have a friend & colleague who has been a ‘low carber’ for years and she refers to refined carbohydrates (bread, pasta, rice, potato, cakes, biscuits etc) as ‘bum glue’. For many who choose a diet that is high in these types of carbohydrates, often suffer from constipation or they find they don’t evacuate their bowel properly when they go to the toilet.
They are the group that will say in clinic, but I have been eating a very healthy diet and I can’t loose weight – they are bum heavy with carbs!
Excess carbohydrates are stored in the body as fat and where does the fat go – bum / thighs (mostly women) & gut (mostly men).

Tuesday 13th July
Had a mocha Shake It this morning – blended the chocolate shake with a dissolve a teaspoon of instant coffee or you could add a small shot of coffee for the same effect + added my usual flakes & oil and whizzed it up.
Bolted over to yoga at lunch time and survived the class – very intense - I’m still nursing a sore shoulder after a bad bike crash last year, so it has stirred that up no end.

Tomorrow morning is weigh and measure………
